Everything we know about building in the Valley, written down so you can read it at 11pm without calling anyone. Real numbers, real code requirements, and the questions you should be asking every contractor you talk to, including us.
The Matson Learning Center is a free library of Arizona-specific remodeling and home building information: published cost ranges for every service we offer, a guide to Arizona's 2025 ADU law, a plan-readiness checklist, 104 frequently asked questions with real answers, and longer articles on bids, permits and HOA approval. Nothing here is gated and nothing asks for your email. Matson Signature Builders is a licensed Arizona builder (ROC 336562) based in Surprise, serving the Phoenix Valley.
Why this exists
Most of what a homeowner needs to know is hidden behind a phone call.
Ask five Arizona builders what a casita costs and you will get five variations of "it depends, let's set up a meeting." It does depend. That is not a reason to make you sit through a sales appointment to find out whether a project is remotely in your range.
So we wrote it all down. What things cost, what the code requires, what your HOA can and cannot stop you from building, what a good bid looks like next to a bad one, and what actually goes wrong on jobs. Some of it will help you hire us. Some of it will help you hire someone else, or decide not to build at all. We are fine with all three outcomes.

Remodeling Costs
Real Arizona price ranges for every service we build, published on the page. Bathrooms from $15,000, kitchens from $25,000, casitas from $150,000, RV garages from $200,000. Most builders here publish nothing.
Contractor Reviews
What our clients actually said, plus how to read a contractor's reviews properly and which platforms are worth your time.
ADU & Casita Guide
Arizona's ADU law changed in 2025 and it opened up a lot of lots. What counts as an ADU, what your city has to allow now, what your HOA can still stop, and what it costs.
Already Have Plans?
A straight checklist for whether your drawings are actually ready to build in Arizona, what is usually missing, and what it takes to get a permit issued.
Remodeling FAQ
104 questions with real answers, from "what does it cost" to "what happens if you find something behind the wall." The longest page on this site, and the most useful.
Remodeling Blog
Longer pieces on the things that decide whether a project goes well: bids, budgets, permits, HOAs, and how to tell a good contractor from a confident one.
Before you call anyone
Five questions that decide how your project goes
1. What am I actually solving?
"The kitchen is dated" and "we cannot all be in the kitchen at once" lead to completely different projects at completely different prices. The second one might mean taking out a wall. The first one might mean cabinets and counters. Get clear on the problem before you fall in love with a solution.
2. What is my real number?
Not your dream number and not your absolute ceiling. The number where you would be genuinely happy to sign. Our published ranges will tell you within a few minutes whether that number and your project are in the same neighborhood.
3. Will my lot and my house allow it?
Setbacks, easements, lot coverage, panel capacity, septic, roofline and HOA architectural rules all constrain what can be built and where. This is the category that surprises people most, and it is worth checking before you spend money on drawings.
4. Who is going to be on my job every day?
Ask it directly, and ask how many other jobs that person is running at the same time. A builder juggling fifteen active projects cannot be on yours, no matter how good they are. It is the single most predictive question you can ask.
5. What happens when something unexpected turns up?
Because something will. The answer you want is specific: work stops, you get shown the problem, you get a price, you decide. The answer you do not want is a shrug, or a bid that was padded with a vague contingency to cover it quietly.
Quick answers
The six we get asked most
The full list runs to 104 questions on the Remodeling FAQ.
What does a remodel cost in the Phoenix area?
Our published 2026 ranges: bathrooms $15,000–$50,000, kitchens $25,000–$250,000, additions $50,000–$500,000, whole-home remodels $50,000–$1,000,000+, casitas $150,000–$1,000,000+, RV garages $200,000–$1,000,000+, custom homes $750,000–$5,000,000+. Full breakdowns on What Things Cost.
Does it cost anything to get an estimate?
No. Consultations, site visits and estimates are free.
Can I build a casita on my lot in Arizona?
Since January 2025, Arizona cities with more than 75,000 residents have been required to allow at least one attached and one detached ADU on most single-family lots. That covers Surprise, Peoria, Goodyear, Buckeye, Glendale, Phoenix, Scottsdale and more. Your HOA's CC&Rs are a separate question. See the ADU guide.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Arizona ROC 336562, dual residential and small commercial (KB-2), with general liability and workers' compensation coverage. Verify the license yourself at the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.
How long does a project take?
Roughly: a bathroom three to six weeks, a kitchen six to twelve weeks, an addition or casita four to eight months including design and permitting, a custom home nine to eighteen months.
What happens if you find a problem behind a wall?
We stop, photograph it, show you what it is, price the fix, and you decide before we go further. Nothing gets added to your bill without your written approval.
